"Entering a New Frontier"
Eliza Petersen
LDS Business College Graduate
President Kusch, faculty and administration, honored guests, and all of the dear parents, friends and fellow students that are watching this celebration remotely, it is truly an honor to be here addressing all of you today. I am incredibly proud of everything that we as a class have accomplished at our time at LDS Business College. These programs, classes and endeavors have created an unforgettable group of graduates.
These are very peculiar times that we are living in, but what an honor it is to live in them. As we graduate now, we are headed out into a world filled with problems that are ready to be solved by us. We have the chance to take what we learn from this pandemic, these floods and fires, earthquakes and tremors, and come out on the other side with solutions and answers developed by the strong group of graduates that we are celebrating with today.
Brothers and sisters, the challenges that many of us are facing are unlike anything we have or ever will experience in our lifetimes. We are entering a new frontier. We are crossing the Great Divide into a changed world. But what a blessing it is to know that we are not entering this new world alone. We have the guidance of the gospel, of our church leaders and of each other to hold us up and lead us into that dark night.
How grateful I am to be able to face these challenges with all of you at my side. Our Christ-centered learning has helped us develop a key skill in navigating these uncertain waters—that skill being the ability to rely on our Savior for comfort, for guidance and for strength.
Dear friends, this day will not be forgotten. This day, we make the choice to bring new light into a world filled with darkness. We make the choice to find answers, to solve problems and to lead others as an ensign of hope.
I am grateful to my beloved teachers and dear friends that I have met at LDS Business College. Congratulations to all of you today. Through our dedication to the Savior, and our commitment to glory, we can change the world.
I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
"Commencement Remarks"
Bruce C. Kusch
President of LDS Business College
As we begin this morning, I would like to share some details about our graduates. Today we will award 601 two-year degrees and 265 certificates to a total of 522 graduates. 271 are women. 251 are men. 257, or 53%, have served full-time missions. 342 of the graduates are from the United States. 180 are from 39 foreign countries, representing 34% of this graduating class. Finally, 156, or 30%, of our graduates are first generation college students, meaning they are the first in their family to earn a college degree. This is remarkable and one of the distinguishing characteristics of LDS Business College. It is a place of hope and opportunity.
Each of you graduating today should feel a sense of accomplishment and achievement. You have worked hard to reach this point in your education.
Now graduates, in your minds, I invite you to think about the many faculty members and others at LDS Business College who have helped you learn and have assisted you along the path to become capable and trusted disciples of Jesus Christ. I hope you might find a way to express your gratitude to them for their love, their dedication and their extraordinary service.
As you watch and participate in this broadcast, I hope you are doing so in the company of parents, other family members and close friends. If we were in the Tabernacle on Temple Square it might be a little challenging to find them in the audience, but if you are with them now please take a minute to express your love and appreciation to them for their support and their guidance. I hope you sense the depth of their joy and love as they celebrate this accomplishment with you today.
There is a story, often told, about a young missionary serving in Preston, England, who arrived in the mission field ill. Preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ is called “missionary work” for a reason: it IS work, and for those who have served missions, you know exactly what I mean. He found being a missionary difficult and challenging. He grew increasingly frustrated. He faced opposition and soon became greatly discouraged. In a letter to his father, he shared the conclusion that not only was he wasting his time, but he was also his father’s money.
That young missionary was Gordon B. Hinckley. He received a brief reply from his father: “Dear Gordon, I have your recent letter. I have only one suggestion, forget yourself and go to work.”
In his scripture study earlier in the day, young Elder Hinckley read this verse in the book of Mark in the New Testament: “Whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it” (Mark 8:35).
This was a turning point in the life of a young missionary, who would later serve as the 15th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. More than 50 years after this experience President Hinckley would write: “With my father’s letter in hand, I went into our bedroom in the house at 15 Wadham Road, where we lived, and got on my knees and I made a pledge with the Lord. I covenanted that I would try to forget myself and lose myself in His service” (Ensign, July 1987, p. 7).
Elder Gordon B. Hinckley did indeed forget himself and he went to work as a missionary. There is no question that he kept that pledge and his covenant; and his example serves as a pattern for you and for me.
These two principles: diligent work, and a commitment to service in the Lord’s kingdom are key ingredients in the recipe for an abundant life. They are like yeast, or leaven, when making bread. Without yeast, bread will not rise. Lacking diligence and a commitment to the Savior, we likewise will not rise to our potential; but will miss out on blessings, privileges and opportunities which otherwise might lift us in ways that we can never even imagine.
My dear friends, I am confident in your abilities. I am excited for your futures and for all that you will achieve. I am grateful that you spent a season at LDS Business College, and pray that the Lord will bless you as you now go forward to a new season of work, and service, and learning.
In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
"Walk in His Ways and Ye Shall Have Peace"
By Jean B. Bingham
Relief Society General President
Well, congratulations, you wonderful graduates! It is surely a sublime feeling to have achieved your dream of graduating from LDS Business College! This is a day to which you have eagerly looked forward. You have worked hard to attain this goal, spending long hours from very early to very late, as you have learned what you need in order to be prepared for a rewarding future. Many of you were excited to “walk” today—to dress in cap and gown and stride across the stage to receive your diploma, along with enjoying a heartfelt handshake and big smiles from President Bruce C. Kusch, selected faculty and other dignitaries who have been delighted to witness your progress. In addition, many parents, family members and friends were also anticipating how they were going to express their support and encouragement to you at this joyful time.
Now, due to circumstances beyond our control, you will have to take that celebratory walk only virtually. Most of you are staying very close to home, not walking much of anywhere except maybe around your neighborhood, and even then, doing so by yourself or with only a few family members or friends with whom you are sequestered. You may be feeling distanced from others as you’ve had to self-isolate for health reasons. You may be feeling frustrated that your “best laid plans”i are not working out as you had anticipated. You may feel the circle of support that has strengthened you in the past has been withdrawn for a space. However, know assuredly that God is in His heaven, and each of us here and every one of your loved ones in their locations are reaching out their arms and hands to virtually embrace you at this unique and very memorable time.
So, dear friends, if you can’t “walk” here today, can you walk wherever you are? Absolutely! Heavenly Father knows who and where you are, and His Atoning Son, Jesus Christ, knows exactly how you feel. They rejoice in your progress and are always by your side as you strive to keep the commandments, become your best and reach out to help others on their way as well. As the perfect Exemplar, your Savior will strengthen you to walk forward, even if the exact path is unclear. Situations certainly will change, and you will be shown the way as you step forward in faith. As the oft-quoted phrase, first recorded by 13th-century Persian poets, attests, “This too shall pass.”ii We can be confident that there is a wise purpose already in place in the divine plan for just this time. Two weeks ago, President M. Russell Ballard reaffirmed, “Everything is going to be just fine as we turn our hearts to our Father in Heaven and look to Him and to the Savior as the Redeemer of all mankind.”iii
Even though you are not able to “walk” in the traditional sense on graduation day, please consider that there are many ways to walk, but none more important than the Savior’s way. Scripturally, we find numerous expressions of walking, such as walk righteously,iv walk uprightly,v walk in the steps of the Lord, walk in the strait path,vi walk in the ways of truth, vii walk in His law, viii walk humbly,ix and walk in the lightx as descriptions of walking in the ways of Jesus Christ. To help us on that path, He offers this gentle yet compelling invitation and promise to each of us: “Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my spirit, and you shall have peace in me.”xi
What a great promise! At this unusual time, we may be particularly desirous to feel peace. The Savior gives us the formula for how to find that peace: learning of Him, listening to his words and walking in the meekness of His spirit. We learn of Him as we read His words and of His deeds in scripture and as they are delivered to us by living prophets. We listen to His words as we strive to “Hear Him”xii through our prayers and pondering, receiving spiritual impressions and seeking for personal revelation to guide our steps.
And what does it mean to “walk in the meekness of [His] spirit?” In current usage, we often describe people who are not assertive, and therefore considered weak, as meek. However, meekness is one of the characteristics of Deity. The Greek rendition of the word meek in the New Testament is “gentle and humble.” Meekness is vital because one cannot develop other essential virtues—faith, hope and charity—without meekness.xiii As we walk in the light of Jesus Christ’s example, we will become more gentle, more humble and full of charity, which will in turn increase our faith in Him and our hope for the glorious future promised to those who endure to the end. Becoming meek is indeed something for which to strive.
As we walk in His way each day, we have the opportunity to learn and grow. Some of our walks are truly like a walk in the park, with a warm sun shining in the blue sky, soft breezes on our cheeks and expanses of green grass that invite strolling along with good friends or close family members. Other walks are more challenging.
Some of the most memorable walks I’ve taken were on trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area between Minnesota and Canada. This wilderness covers more than a million acres and includes more than 1,000 large and small lakes, but there is no river that connects them all. At the ends of each lake are trails that lead to the next one. Each person must portage, which means to get out of the canoe and shoulder their own gear and some of the group equipment, as well as carry their canoe, to the next lake. Now, some of the trails between lakes are steep and rocky, others are swampy and muddy and some include all of those elements. Depending on the length of the portage, all of the equipment can be taken at once or sometimes it must be moved in stages, necessitating several trips back and forth on the trail.
I remember that the shorter, flatter and wider trails through the beautiful sun-dappled forest which is carpeted with colorful wildflowers and filled with singing birds were a welcome respite from the back-straining paddling against the strong wind we had often just finished out on a lake. On the other hand, the steep, rock-strewn trails with either slopes of shifting gravel or big, knotty, exposed tree roots, just waiting to trip you on the way up or down, were daunting. Then there were the narrow, wet, slippery trails with thick mud that clung tenaciously to our shoes, making them heavier with each step as we desperately tried to keep our balance on the unsteady ground under the heavy loads we carried, while clouds of mosquitos whined in our ears and stabbed at any uncovered skin. Those trails were at least as challenging! Nicknamed “Big Agony” by those who traversed it, one of those unforgettable trails included all of the characteristics I just mentioned.
And yet—we kept going back for many years. Why? The overall experience was worth slogging through the difficult parts. In the end, we found much more beauty than burden; the joy and fulfillment we felt at the conclusion was absolutely worth the discomfort along the way. And contrary to what might be assumed, helping others as we traveled made the experience sweeter. Offering to shoulder someone’s backpack or take an extra turn as the power paddler in the midst of a fierce wind or finding firewood without being asked—each of these efforts to lift another increased our own happiness and satisfaction.
Different people had different approaches to successfully getting over the more unpleasant trails. One individual talked the whole time about physics or engineering or any number of topics that distracted us from the labor at hand. Others sang cheerful songs—until their breath became short from the exertion—and then resumed the song as soon as they could. They chose songs that required several parts in a round to encourage others to join in. Another person counted aloud each step required to get closer to the goal, which on the longer trails helped us feel a great sense of satisfaction that we had accomplished such a significant feat.
Life is much like those canoe trips. We face difficult challenges at times and need to be flexible in finding solutions to problems as they arise. Focusing on the good things around us rather than just on the immediate concerns, helping to ease the burdens of others even in the midst of our own trials and taking time to observe and applaud progress can bring hope and make our troubles lighter. Bishop W. Christopher Waddell reminded us of the inevitability of tests as well as the promise of receiving the “peace [that] passeth all understanding”xiv when he taught: “Peace of mind, peace of conscience and peace of heart are not determined by our ability to avoid trials, sorrow or heartache. Despite our sincere pleas, not every storm will change course, not every infirmity will be healed and we may not fully understand every doctrine, principle or practice taught by prophets, seers and revelators. Nevertheless, we have been promised peace—with a condition attached.”xv
That condition is that we have faith in our Heavenly Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ and His Atonement. There are incomparable beauties and delights all along life’s journey that remind us of who we are and why we are here and where we are going. There are also difficulties and tribulations. All of these elements, both the trials and the joys, are included in our Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness. As we focus on the eternal outcome we desire rather than the current, temporary discomforts, we are better able to learn from our challenges as He intended. As we keep putting one foot in front of the other with faith in Jesus Christ, we will feel peace as we accomplish our goals and fulfill our divine potential. Remember the sublime reward that is waiting for each one who chooses to walk in the Savior’s way: “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”xvi
One of the great strengths of an education from LDS Business College is the emphasis on spiritual growth. Many institutions of higher learning help students increase in subject knowledge and the mastery of technical skills, but not many strengthen testimonies of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. All of these types of learning have blessed your life while you have been a student here. Now that you have completed this great goal of graduation, what is next? How can you progress spiritually as well as temporally? Do you still need professors to guide your daily work? Although their words may echo in your mind and even be prominently displayed on your fridge or bathroom mirror long after you finish your degree, it is now up to you to daily apply what you have learned.
So ask yourself, “How can I continue to walk in the ways of righteousness?” Do you have a few favorite scriptures or hymns or Primary songs fixed in your mind that will remind you on those difficult days to continue to follow the Savior’s example? Find those reminders and commit them to memory, keep those scriptures close to your heart, and hum those songs whenever you encounter challenges.
From the most ancient scriptural records to the most modern, from the Old Testament to the Doctrine and Covenants, there are numerous verses that instruct and inspire and uplift. Some of my favorites include this one from Doctrine and Covenants 122:7: “Know thou, my son [or daughter], that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.” Our Father reassures us that there is a wise purpose for all of life’s problems, and they will result in our eternal progress to become like Him if we keep striving to follow Jesus Christ.
Another scripture, from the Old Testament, is Psalm 84:11–12: “No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man [and woman] that trusteth in thee.”
And in the New Testament, we find these reassuring words in John 8:12: “Then spake Jesus … unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” What a great promise in these days of spiritual darkness covering much of the world!
From the Book of Mormon, one that is meaningful to me is Alma 7:9: “But behold, the Spirit hath said … to me … : Cry unto this people, …Repent ye, and prepare the way of the Lord, and walk in his paths, which are straight; for behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and the Son of God cometh upon the face of the earth.” In these last days, we are preparing for the return of Jesus Christ. An essential part of that preparation for each of us is daily repenting and learning to walk in His straight paths.
A familiar hymn that is also a Primary song expresses our plea for divine help and also includes the keys to walking in the Savior’s way:
Teach me to walk in the light of his love;
Teach me to pray to my Father above;
Teach me to know of the things that are right;
Teach me, teach me to walk in the light.
Come, little child, and together we’ll learn
Of his commandments, that we may return
Home to his presence, to live in his sight—
Always, always to walk in the light.
Father in Heaven, we thank thee this day
For loving guidance to show us the way.
Grateful, we praise thee with songs of delight!
Gladly, gladly we’ll walk in the light.xvii
What can you do to encourage others to walk in His light, to stay on the covenant path and to invite them to join you on the journey? There are many who feel alone or who know not where to find the peace the gospel brings. When we help others along the way back to our heavenly home, our experience becomes more joyful. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland expressed: “We may not be able to alter the journey, but we can make sure no one walks it alone. Surely that is what it means to bear one another's burdens.”xviii And Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf counsels us to invite others to “come and see, come and help, and come and stay.”xix As we do so, our own testimonies are increased, our individual resolve is strengthened and our joy is multiplied when we bring others on the covenant path with us.xx
As you move out into the world and take your place in companies, corporations and cooperatives, you have the opportunity to make a significant difference. What you have learned at LDS Business College will help you become all you were designed to be by your Heavenly Father if you walk in the ways of Jesus Christ. Your circles of influence will include many who are hoping to be shown that greater light. I invite you and encourage you to stay on the covenant path and help others along the way. Your efforts to do so will be a great blessing to yourself, those with whom you share His light and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You are promised that if you “search diligently, pray always, and [are] believing, … all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted.”xxi
It will not be easy, but it will be eternally worth the effort to grow in faith and be consistent in walking in the meekness of Jesus Christ in order to enjoy His promised peace. We hear that message in the words of this song:
I walk today along the path of life.
No more a child protected from the strife.
Now I must face whatever foes may come
And fight with strength until the battle's won.
I trembling fear the task is far too great,
On every side the Tempter lies in wait.
What can I do? I plead to Him above,
Then hear Him speak these gentle words of love:
Learn of me and listen to my words,
Walk in the meekness of my light
And I shall give you peace,
My love will never cease,
For I am Jesus Christ.xxii
I believe I speak for President Kusch, the faculty and all leaders who are here today when I say, “[We] have no greater joy than to hear that [our] children walk in truth.”xxiii As some of those precious children of God, you have the capacity to be strong, faithful and resilient, and it is vitally important that you make the choice to stay on the covenant path no matter what challenges come. As you look to the future, may you continue to walk in the meekness of the Spirit of the Lord and thereby reach your eternal goals. I bear you my witness that it will be worth every effort. In the blessed name of Jesus Christ, amen.
