Niche Scholarship Options You Shouldn't Ignore


As you work through the planning process to pay for college , it’s important to leave no stone unturned. One element of financial aid that eludes some students is the opportunity for institutional scholarships offered by their school. These “niche” scholarships cater to the common circumstances of a particular college’s student body, and are often easier to qualify for.

So, it stands to reason that you should spend some time getting familiar with your college’s scholarship line-up. Are you considering attending Ensign College? Then read on!

Below, we’ve outlined the scholarships offered by Ensign College to qualified applicants (as of March 18, 2021), so you can make informed decisions about your financial options.   1. Academic Merit Scholarship . A merit-based scholarship that recognizes students who have maintained academic excellence in their past schooling.

    • Who should apply - Incoming freshman, transfers, and continuing students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.7. This scholarship is available for both domestic and international students, but full-time enrollment (12+ credits) is required. 
    • Award amount - Tier 1: 75% tuition, Tier 2: 50% tuition, Tier 3: 35% tuition.
  2. Self-Reliance Scholarship . New and continuing students may complete any of the self-reliance courses and become eligible for this scholarship.

    • Who should apply - New and continuing students who complete a Self-Reliance courses offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints within Utah’s Wasatch Front (Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah Counties.)
    • The approved courses are -

      • Personal Finance
      • Find a Better Job
      • Education for a Better Work
      • Starting and Growing My Business
      • Emotional Resilience *new*
      • Life Skills (must have completed all three sections) *new*
    • Award amount - $500 (12+ credits) and up to $250 (for less than 12 credits).
  3. Ensign College Hope Scholarship . Intended to help students with a demonstrated financial need that is not tied to academic performance.

    • Who should apply - Any domestic student who is enrolled full time (12+ credits), and is eligible to receive federal student aid (Pell Grants & Direct Loans). Eligibility is determined using a completed federal financial aid application (FAFSA).
    • Award amount - Up to 50% tuition for one semester.
  4. Returned Missionary Scholarship . For returned missionaries who served an honorable mission.

    • Who should apply - New and continuing students who are enrolled full time (12+ credits). This scholarship can only be received once while attending Ensign College
    • Award amount - Half-tuition for one semester.
  5. Single Parent Scholarship . For students who are single parents with a dependent child in the home.

    • Who should apply – Both domestic and international Ensign College students who are single parents with a dependent child in the home. Full-time attendance is not required for this scholarship, as the amount will prorate based upon credits enrolled. Eligibility will be determined by applicants’ FAFSA (Federal Financial Aid application). See other requirements here .
    • Award amount - 120% tuition for Church members and 60% tuition for non-members.
  6. Hinckley Scholarship . For continuing students with at least 28 Ensign College credits and at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Based competitively on college scholastic record and a written essay.

    • Who should apply – Students who meet the above requirements, and are enrolled full time (12+ credits). This scholarship, endowed by the family of Gordon B. Hinckley, is only available to students for one term. Applicants will need to submit an essay stating how they, as an Ensign College student, feel they epitomize the Ensign College Mission Statement in personal testimony, academics, and service.
    • Award amount - $1,150 for one semester.
  7. Ensign College M. Russell Ballard Leadership Scholarship . Intended to recognize Ensign College students who have demonstrated leadership and service characteristics as exemplified by M. Russell Ballard’s life and teachings.

    • Who should apply – Students who can demonstrate in an essay how they have been wise and anxiously engaged in service opportunities and/or have been “an example of the believers” by always striving to change lives through positive and fair leadership. Applicants will also be asked to submit two letters of recommendation on their behalf.
    • Award amount - Full Church-member tuition for two semesters.
  8. Pathway Scholarship . For students who complete the Pathway Program in the United States with a GPA of 3.0 or higher - and attend the institution on campus.

    • Who should apply - The Pathway Scholarship is available to incoming Ensign College students who meet the requirements outlined here. Full time attendance is not required, and, if eligible, this scholarship enables you to continue paying the U.S. PathwayConnect rate as you attend Ensign College.
    • Award amount - Tuition minus current PathwayConnect rate.
  9. Program Excellence Scholarship . For continuing students who meet program-specific criteria created and evaluated by their program chairs.

    • Who should apply - Continuing students under the direction of their program chairs. Recipients will need to be enrolled full-time and meet all other eligibility requirements mentioned in the Ensign College Scholarship Policy.

    • Award amount - 25% Tuition.
  10. Service/Leadership Scholarship . Supports students invested in their Ensign College campus community through leadership and service to others.

    • Who should apply - Recipients will be selected by the Ensign College Student Success Center, Dean of Students office and a designated member of the faculty who works with student clubs. Full-time enrollment (12+ credits) is required.
    • Award amount - 50% Tuition.
