President Gordon B. Hinckley

Legacy of Bryant S. and Ada Bitner Hinckley

Delivered at an event honoring the legacy left to the College by Bryant S. and Ada Bitner Hinckley, and to celebrate the endowment of a scholarship fund established in the two educators’ name.

I think of all the attributes that I’ve heard about and seen today and perhaps the most outstanding was that my father and my mother could write with a penmanship that could be read. You don’t see that any more. People scribble and so on and so on. But they wrote in a beautiful hand, each one of them. And it was really very attractive the way in which they did it.

Now Mark Willes hasn’t told you that he not only contributed very substantially for this endowment fund, but also has made a contribution in behalf of his mother who attended the business college at one time. And we’re deeply and greatly indebted to him for his tremendous kindness in this matter.

I don’t know when it was, President Woodhouse, when we were in a meeting of the Board of Trustees and you handed out some kind of a bulletin, and it had in that bulletin a reference to the Bryant S. and Ada B. Hinckley faculty scholarship. And I’d never heard of it before and I was fascinated with the fact that the faculty had taken the initiative to try to put together a little money to assist students who attended here. And I immediately wrote to Brother Woodhouse and got this thing going. I’m very, very grateful that it has attained the size that it has, and I hope that it will continue to grow, perhaps by small increments so that more and more and more students may be benefited and blessed because of this undertaking.

Now, I want you to take a good look at these premises, because you’re not going to have them much longer. We’re going to move to better quarters. I’ve been in meetings the last day or two concerning the new quarters of the business college. They’re going to be very nice. They’re going to be very attractive. And you students who are dormitory students… I’d better not say any more… you’re going to have a nice place to sleep. It will be an improvement over what you have.

The Church is committed to the continuation of the business college. This serves a very unique and interesting place, and will continue to do so. These students which come from many areas come here and are so benefited and so blest in training for their vocational experiences. And this will go on and on, and I hope that it will increase in importance and stature as part of the Church’s educational program.

God bless you, my beloved brothers and sisters, associates, and members of my family. I’ve never seen so many family members together in one place in the last ten years. Well, thank you, and the Lord bless you. We leave our testimony and our blessing and our love with you, in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen.
