Kenia Cabral’s story is a testament to embracing change and lifelong learning. Shifting careers can feel intimidating, but for Kenia, it became an empowering choice.
From Healthcare to Communication
Kenia's journey began in Brazil, where she worked as a music therapist. However, when she moved to the United States, she discovered her therapy license wasn’t recognized here. Rather than letting this stop her, Kenia saw it as an opportunity. "I wanted to keep going in healthcare," she recalls, which led her to Ensign College's medical assisting certificate program.
But Kenia's educational path didn’t stop there. After completing her certificate, she decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in communication. Why the change? Kenia recognized the essential role of communication in healthcare. "Without communication, we cannot help patients," she explains, realizing that integrating her healthcare knowledge with communication skills could open new doors in a rapidly evolving field.
Flexibility and Personalization at Ensign College
Kenia appreciated the flexibility and support Ensign offers to students. “The schedule is great,” she notes, pointing out the support from the Student Success Center and advisors who helped tailor her academic plan to fit her busy life. “I was working and going to school at the same time, and it worked just fine for me. I could finish everything that I needed."
Kenia also values the practical approach of her classes. “I had a lot of friends who had full-time jobs and were doing school as well. It actually helped them get better at their jobs because they were developing skills they needed at the same time. They brought their work experiences into the classroom, and we’d brainstorm solutions together. This hands-on approach has helped Kenia and her classmates develop practical skills and foster collaborative problem-solving.
A Spiritual and Welcoming Environment
Transitioning from a large university in Brazil to the smaller, more personal setting at Ensign College was refreshing for Kenia. “The environment is so different and inviting,” she shares. She also appreciated starting classes with prayer and having classmates who share her spiritual values. This faith-centered atmosphere has supported her personal and spiritual growth.
Advice for Students
For those considering college or a career change, Kenia offers simple advice: “Don’t be afraid to change. Change is good. It makes you stretch yourself and discover new skills.” She adds, “Changing direction isn’t about going backward—it’s about moving forward.”
