Everything we use and enjoy in our world is available because of supply chains. Whether it’s buying fresh fruit in the winter months, receiving a package two days after placing your order or simply buying a hamburger for less money than you’d spend cooking your own, we are ALL beneficiaries of the power and efficiency of supply chains.
Consider something as simple as a Snickers candy bar. They’re always on the shelf, at a price we’re willing to pay, because of supply chains. The peanuts, milk, egg, soy and sugar—not to mention the plastics, ink, glue and cutting machines required to complete the packaging process—all have to be procured, shipped to a production facility and then delivered to local stores. In some cases you can break it down even further (e.g., soy has to be grown, harvested, packaged and shipped) and find other supply chains at work, all making it possible for us to enjoy a delicious treat, pretty much whenever we want it.
Careers in supply chain are plentiful, broad and include everything from the routine to the constantly changing. Many supply chain professionals spend their entire career working on one link in the chain, such as the dairy farmer producing milk, the yogurt factory employee purchasing milk and the truck driver transporting the packaged yogurt to grocery stores. If there’s a link in the chain, there are jobs to be done, and lots of them.
The Global Supply Chain & Operations program at LDS Business College will prepare you for a lasting and fulfilling career as a supply chain professional. We’ll teach you about supply chains and help you develop skills in purchasing, logistics and quality management. You’ll be prepared to find the link in the chain where you can make a difference in the lives of people everywhere.
