Encourage Independence
College is a critical time for young adults to develop independence. Encourage your student to take responsibility for their actions, decisions, and their studies. This includes letting them manage their schedules, solve their own problems, and make their own decisions, even if they make mistakes along the way. Understand that mistakes are part of learning.

Stay Connected
Regular communication is key. This doesn’t mean you need to speak every day, but establishing a routine check-in schedule can provide your student with a sense of security and support. Respect their independence and growth into adulthood by listening more than advising, and by being there when they reach out.
