Associate Degree, Certificate

Create digital products people love!
Have you ever noticed how some websites and apps are so much better than others? The difference is good UX design. UX designers conduct audience research to understand what customers really need and how they want to use the product. They then design and create prototypes that user interface designers and developers turn into a final, user-friendly product.

Program Overview

The User Experience Design certificate is part of the Communication department and can be included in the Communication AAS and BAS programs. It can also be your first step in the Software Engineering BAS program.

You can also receive a stand-alone certificate or combine the certificate with general education courses for an associate degree (AS) that is completely transferable.

In the User Experience Design program, you will develop design skills and coding skills and learn how to develop UX strategy.

Required Courses

  • Design Thinking (COMM 215): Gain a foundational and practical understanding of design thinking skills and principles. Learn techniques to empathize better with the customer’s social, emotional, and physical needs, to quickly define, ideate, prototype, test, and implement new ideas.
  • Graphic Design (DCC 210): Build a foundation in design principles and elements, as well as exposure to relevant design tools.
  • Introduction to UI Development (UI 101): The student will learn how to build a web-based experience, by designing, handing off, and implementing user interfaces (UI). The goal is to prepare them to either continue studying frontend development or to collaborate as part of a design team.
  • UX Strategy & Management (COMM 225): Focus on the basics of strategy building (where are we now, where do we want to be, how do we get there) in the context of UX and how to implement plans and processes for realizing those strategies.
  • Advanced UX Design (COMM 235): Dive deeper into techniques for evaluating and utilizing established best practices, requirements gathering, advanced prototyping techniques, and testing methodologies.

You’ll also leave with the skills to communicate effectively, articulate your career preparation confidently, and collaborate with others meaningfully. And in all things, we’ll help you work toward becoming a capable and trusted disciple of Jesus Christ. So whatever you do, you’ll be prepared to be the best you possible.

User Experience Design is a certificate. It is part of the Communication AAS and BAS programs and can be combined with general education courses for an associate of science (AS) degree.

User experience (UX) designers research customer needs and design products that meet those needs.

Digital designers develop, create, and test website or interface layout, functions, and navigation for usability. They are responsible for the look and functionality of the website or interface.
