From Participant to Leader: Skyler Hall's Business Club Journey

Skyler Hall never pictured himself as a leader, but he has become one through his experiences with the Ensign College Business Club .

The Business Club helps students enhance their learning, grow as leaders, and push beyond their perceived limits through organizations such as FBLA, CEO, and DECA.

In high school, Skyler competed in DECA, a nonprofit that prepares students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management, but never volunteered for a leadership position. That changed after his mission, where he served in leadership assignments. “I never wanted those roles,” he admits, “but I realized I could have learned leadership skills if I had worked a leadership position in high school.”

After returning home, Skyler was determined to change. During his second semester at Ensign, he went to the Business Club office and asked for a leadership position. That one decision opened the door to a whole new chapter.

Since then, he has served as FBLA president, Business Club president, and vice president — and now president — of DECA. Through every role, he’s discovered that “true leadership qualities don’t show up unless you are having issues,” he says. Skyler has learned that when issues come up, it’s best to stay clear-headed, come up with solutions, and communicate with the people involved.

Skyler also works as a teaching assistant for Brother Brent Andrus, a program chair in the Business Management department and Business Club advisor, who’s been a great mentor. “He’s given me hands-on opportunities to grow,” he shares. One of those was designing a new badge program for DECA members, a system that helps students prepare for exams and track their progress before competitions.

His favorite moments as a leader are watching students realize how far they can go. “One thing that always gets me is that students come afterwards and thank me for pushing them to do this. They eventually won something that they weren’t sure they could do.”

For Skyler, Ensign’s environment has been important to that transformation. “Even if you’re not in a leadership position, you are being a leader to someone,” he says. “The Business Club is the best place to take all the college-wide capabilities and apply them in your learning.”

Now that the DECA state competition approaches, Skyler is guiding teams as they refine their papers and presentations, using all of his experience to lead with confidence.

At Ensign College, Skyler learned that leadership is about taking on opportunities. Ensign provides opportunities to develop leadership skills inside and outside the classroom.
