Ewan Ferguson, a TA in the Information Technology department, completed his degree this semester. Here are some words of advice he'd like to share with current and incoming students.
Dear Future and Current Students,
As I reflect on my four years of university experience, I'm filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunities for growth, learning, and spiritual exploration that I've encountered along the way. As you embark on your own journey, I want to share some insights and reflections that I hope will serve as a guide for your academic and spiritual pursuits.
First and foremost, I encourage you to approach your university experience with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the unknown. Each course, each lecture, and each interaction holds the potential to expand your horizons and deepen your understanding of the world around you. Be curious, ask questions, and seek out opportunities for intellectual and spiritual exploration.
Learning how to learn is a skill that will serve you well throughout your academic journey and beyond. Take the time to develop effective study habits, time management skills, and critical thinking abilities. Experiment with different learning strategies, such as active reading, note-taking techniques, and collaborative learning approaches, to find what works best for you. Remember that learning is not just about memorizing facts and figures but about developing the ability to think critically, analyze information, and apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
In addition to academic pursuits, I encourage you to prioritize your spiritual growth and well-being during your time at university. Nurture your spiritual life through regular prayer, meditation, scripture reading, and reflection. Seek out opportunities for spiritual mentorship, guidance, and community involvement. Engage with campus ministries, religious organizations, or spiritual support groups that resonate with your beliefs and values. Remember that spirituality is a deeply personal journey, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Trust in your intuition, follow your heart, and allow yourself the freedom to explore and discover what nourishes your soul.
As you navigate the ups and downs of university life, remember to prioritize self-care and well-being. Take breaks when needed, practice stress management techniques, and cultivate healthy habits that support your physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Remember that it's okay to ask for help when you need it, whether it's from professors, peers, or campus support services. You are not alone on this journey, and there are resources and support systems available to help you succeed.
Finally, I encourage you to approach your university experience with a spirit of gratitude, humility, and resilience. Celebrate your successes, learn from your failures, and embrace the challenges and opportunities that come your way. Trust in yourself, trust in the process, and trust in the transformative power of education and spiritual growth.
As you embark on this journey, know that you are capable, you are worthy, and you are deserving of all the blessings and opportunities that come your way. May your time at university be filled with joy, discovery, and transformation.
With warmest regards,
Ewan
