What is a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) Degree?
A Bachelor of Applied Science is a hands-on, career-focused degree designed to give you real-world skills and knowledge that directly prepare you for your chosen career. Unlike traditional bachelor’s degrees, the BAS requires fewer general education courses and emphasizes practical application. It’s often a great option for students who already have an associate degree and want to advance in their field. If you’re considering this path, your Academic Advisor can help you explore how a BAS supports your career goals.
What’s the difference between an Associate of Science (AS) and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS)?
- AS Degree – This degree emphasizes general education and is designed to transfer to a four-year university as part of a bachelor’s degree program.
- AAS Degree – This degree immerses you in specialized, career-related courses to prepare you for the workforce. It’s not primarily designed for transfer, though some courses may still apply toward a bachelor’s degree depending on the receiving institution.
If you’re unsure which degree is right for you, your Academic Advisor is the perfect person to help you decide.
Do I need a certificate if I enroll in the AS degree?
Yes. All AS students must complete at least one certificate. This helps you gain marketable skills while working toward your degree.
As an International Student, can I take just a certificate?
No. Federal regulations require international students to be enrolled in a degree program. Certificates must be paired with either an AS or an AAS degree to meet this requirement. For guidance, please connect with the International Office (international@ensign.edu).
