Overview
PBWE is a class where students work on student-led, company-advised projects that are sponsored by organizations. PBWE provides an opportunity for students to focus on real business projects.
Students meet 6 times in class for project training each semester and work outside of class with their team to complete the project (7-9 hours a week per student, 40 hours a week per team).
How It Works
Course Requirements
Students will attend class meetings as scheduled and will complete an engagement letter, project, plan, required learning Canvas modules, and a midterm/final report.
Projects and Teams
Once you are registered and have applied, the PBWE Coordinator will assign you to a project and team. You will be notified of your team assignment somewhere between the week before classes start and the first week of class.
Each cross-functional team includes roles such as team leader, project manager, sponsor liaison, deliverables manager, and reports manager.
Tracking Hours
Students work 7-9 hours a week on their project, tracking and reporting hours on time sheets. Countable hours might include time spent on team meetings, project research, work done on project deliverables, time spent on Canvas modules and Qualtrics 360 survey, and attendance in class.
Employer Expectations
Project sponsors (employers) expect students to view a PBWE as a real job where real problems are solved. Students are required to be professional and use critical thinking and teamwork to complete projects.

Get the Experience to Get the Job
You can't get a job without experience ... but you can't get experience without a job. Project-based work experience is a great way to develop and refine marketable skills. Partnering with a business, you may work on a project in a variety of fields, including marketing, social media, information technology, communications, supply chain, and more.
A project-based internship provides an opportunity to:
- Test drive your future career without relocating, quitting a part-time job, or taking time off school
- Apply the tools you're learning in the classroom in a real-world setting
- Gain professional work experience and references to highlight in resumes and future job interviews
- Network with industry and career professionals who can mentor and assist you
Please Note:
- This class (CAR 300R) does NOT meet the internship requirement to receive a degree from Ensign College.
- You will not be paid for your work. You will receive elective credit.
- You are not guaranteed a future job or internship.
